Respiratory disease is a major and growing problem in the United States and worldwide. Two of the most common respiratory diseases are asthma and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), affecting 17 million and 30 million Americans respectively.
Spirometry is a simple yet powerful tool which gives the medical team objective information on lung function – both the type of airflow problem and the severity. It is essential in the early screening of patients at risk for COPD, in the diagnosis of asthma and COPD and in the staging of severity of both conditions.
During the one-day Spirometry Workshop, participants learn more about lung function testing - patient characteristics and preparation as well as machine characteristics, use, and maintenance. They learn to perform reliable spirometry testing and to interpret results in line with their expertise, licensure, and clinical role. This is a hands-on workshop, designed to empower health professionals to return to their clinical settings with enhanced skills in spirometry testing and interpretation.
Learning Objectives
At the end of the workshop, students will be able to:
- Describe preparation and characteristics of spirometry patients and equipment
- Perform spirometry, meeting quality assurance measures
- Compare and contrast normal, obstructive, and restrictive spirometry tracings
- Perform basic interpretation of spirometry tracings.
Target Audience
Nurses (registered nurses, licensed practical/vocational nurses, medical assistants), nurse practitioners, physician assistants, respiratory therapists, case managers, and physicians who are actively involved in the care of patients with asthma, COPD, or other respiratory conditions. Maximum benefit will be derived if the allied health professionals who attend have physician colleague support for implementing new knowledge in the practice setting.

- AANP. This program has been approved for 6.0 contact hours of continuing education by the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners. Program ID 0703156.
- AAPA. This program has been reviewed and is approved for a maximum of 6.0 hours of AAPA Category I (Pre-approved) CME credit by the Physician Assistant Review Panel.
- AARC. The American Association for Respiratory Care has granted the Spirometry Workshop 6.0 hours of continuing education credit (CRCE). Provider #9380443.
- CBRN. The Spirometry Workshop is approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing, Provider #13556 for 6.9 contact hours.
